How to Install LVP Flooring
A complete guide to installing luxury vinyl plank flooring — from subfloor prep and layout through locking the planks and installing transitions. No adhesive required for floating installs.
Run planks parallel to the longest wall or the primary light source. This makes the room appear larger and hides minor seam variations better than any other direction choice.
Never install LVP over carpet. Remove all existing carpet, padding, and staples before proceeding. Moisture trapped under flooring will void the warranty and cause early failure.
Steps
Prepare the Subfloor
The subfloor must be clean, dry, and flat within 3/16" per 10-foot span. Sweep or vacuum thoroughly. Sand down high spots and fill low spots with floor leveling compound. Allow compound to cure fully before proceeding.
Acclimate the Flooring
Bring LVP planks into the room 48 hours before installation. Stack boxes flat in the space where they will be installed. Room temperature should be between 65–85°F. This step prevents expansion and gapping after install.
Plan Your Layout
Measure the room and calculate the starting position so cut pieces on opposite walls are equal and not narrower than half a plank. Snap a chalk line as your reference. Account for the manufacturer-specified expansion gap (typically 1/4") at all walls and fixed objects.
