Before you start any tile work: dry-lay your tile pattern first. Saves cutting and catches layout problems before you mix a single batch of thinset. I have seen homeowners waste entire boxes of tile by skipping this step.

How long does a roof actually last in Texas heat? I have a 12-year-old architectural shingle roof and getting conflicting answers from contractors. Some say it is fine, others say I am on borrowed time.

RoofRight_TXIn DFW heat: quality architecturals run 20-25 years but UV degrades them faster. Get a certified inspector, not just a sales pitch.

Finally finished the deck staining. Two coats Cabot Australian Timber Oil. Came out better than expected after the first coat looked rough.

PatioDaveAustralian Timber Oil is the move. How long did you wait between coats?

Shared my kitchen remodel Build Board. We are at week 3 of 8. Budget tracking has been a lifesaver — caught a $600 overage on cabinet hardware early.

Anyone dealt with polybutylene pipes in an older home? Just bought a 1989 house and inspector flagged them. Trying to figure out if replacement is urgent or can wait a year while I handle other priorities.

PW
PlumbWorksDo not wait. PB pipe fails without warning. Insurance may also drop you once they find out.

KarenLWent through this in 2024. Budget $4-8k depending on house size. Worth every penny.

When getting roofing bids: always ask what underlayment they use. Cheap contractors skip upgraded underlayment to cut costs. It is the most important layer nobody talks about. Synthetic underlayment vs. 15-lb felt is a 20-year difference in protection.

DH
dallas_homeownerThis is exactly what I needed to hear. None of my bids mentioned underlayment.

What is the difference between a general contractor and a specialty contractor? When do I actually need a GC versus just hiring a plumber or electrician directly?

Best Answer

A GC coordinates multiple trades and is your single point of accountability. Hire one when the job involves 2+ trades, permits across disciplines, or when you cannot manage the schedule yourself.

GC
GeneralContractorProBest answer above covers it well. The liability piece is the part most homeowners overlook.
