Why Use This Tool?

GFCI and AFCI requirements have expanded significantly under NEC 2020 and 2023. Many older homes are not up to current code. Understanding what your home needs helps you ask the right questions when getting electrical quotes and prioritize safety upgrades.

About This Tool

GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) protection prevents electrocution near water sources. AFCI (Arc Fault Circuit Interrupter) protection prevents electrical fires caused by arcing faults. Both are required by the NEC in specific locations. NEC 2023 expanded GFCI and AFCI requirements — use this checker to see if your home is current.

How It Works

1
Enter your home build year

Older homes were built to previous NEC editions with different requirements. The checker applies the code version relevant to your home’s construction and any renovation work.

2
Select which rooms you want to check

Kitchens, bathrooms, garages, basements, outdoor areas, and bedrooms all have specific GFCI/AFCI requirements.

3
See your requirements

The checker returns a list of required GFCI and AFCI protections for each area, with upgrade cost estimates.

Cost Context

A GFCI outlet replacement costs $100–$200 installed. An AFCI breaker costs $150–$250 installed. A full GFCI/AFCI compliance upgrade for an older home can run $800–$3,000 depending on the number of circuits and outlets involved.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where are GFCI outlets required?
Under NEC 2023, GFCI protection is required in: kitchens (within 6 feet of a sink), bathrooms, garages, unfinished basements, outdoors, crawl spaces, boathouses, and near swimming pools and hot tubs. Kitchen countertop receptacles require GFCI regardless of distance from the sink under NEC 2023.
Where are AFCI breakers required?
Under NEC 2023, AFCI protection is required for all 120V, 15- and 20-amp branch circuits serving: bedrooms, living rooms, parlors, libraries, dens, sunrooms, recreation rooms, closets, hallways, laundry areas, and similar rooms. In practical terms, this means most habitable areas of the home.
Does my existing home need to be upgraded to NEC 2023?
Existing homes are generally grandfathered under the code edition that was in effect when they were built. However, when you do electrical work (panel upgrade, adding circuits), the new work must meet current code. Some jurisdictions also require bringing certain areas up to current GFCI code when doing any permitted electrical work.
